SketchUp Integrated Media Workshop

The two day seminar will engage attendees with graphic instruction using new technologies and methods for the combination of hand and computer renderings to more effectively communicate design intent to clients, local authorities and the general public. In addition, effective use of different techniques for communication will be taught.

Speaker Bios

Mansoor Ma is a landscape architect and Associate Principal at LANDinc., a well established firm in Canada for landscape architecture and urban design. Besides his knowledge and practice in the field of landscape architecture since 1991, he also possesses sound experience and techniques in the use of hand graphics and cutting-edge computer technologies as his landscape design "tool sets" for analysing, understanding, exploring, interactively designing as well as interpreting designed space for design communication purposes.

Cameron Berglund received his BLA ('05) and MLA ('16) from the University of Georgia. He enjoys creative problem-solving on multidisciplinary projects, and he continues his multidiscipline design and illustration work in conjunction with passing on his passion and knowledge to the next  generation of designers.

LECTURE TRACK

Tuesday February 1st

Session 1

The three lectures in this session will dive into the basics of and the design of pollinator habitats. This will include insects common on flowering plants, specific species information for pollinator habitats and the aesthetics associated with designing a pollinator habitat.

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Bodie Pennisi:Pollinators and Other Beneficial Insects - A Closer Look at the Arthropod Community (1 CEU) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: Dr. Bodie Pennisi is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia. She is responsible for planning and coordinating a statewide Extension program to support the professional landscape industry, and conducting applied research with emphasis on sustainable landscape practices such as biodegradable containers and microbial inoculants.

Speaker Bio: Greg Huber is a public service and outreach faculty member of the University of Georgia and leads the Georgia Certified Landscape and Plant Professional Programs through the Georgia Center for Urban Agriculture. Huber is a Georgia registered landscape architect and holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia.

1:30 PM– 2:30 PM Eric Nelson: Lightweight Aggregates (1 CEU) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: Eric Nelson is a Sales Representative for Arcosa Lightweight specializing in horticulture and storm water applications. He is a licensed landscape architect based in Arlington, Texas and serves on the horticulture and storm water committees at the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute.

Description: This lecture will discuss the production of Arcosa Lightweight Aggregates. It will also cover the uses of the material in the Landscape Architecture field.

2:30 PM– 3:30 PMAllie Kelly: The Ray – Planning for Roadside Solar Collection (1 CEU) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: Allie Kelly is Executive Director of The Ray. In that role, she leads the nonprofit organization that has built the nation's only publicly accessible, living laboratory for transportation innovation. In three years, she has helped the organization to implement and build almost a dozen ground-breaking, world-leading technology demonstrations, including the first solar road in the United States and the world's first public demonstration of a drive-through tire safety station.

Description: This lecture will focus on the uses of unused right of way space along highways for renewable energy. It will provide the advantages of roadside solar energy collection for the Federal and State Departments of Transportation.

4:00 PM– 5:30 PM Martin Harwood: Chattahoochee RiverLands (1.5 CEUs) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: Martin Harwood, RLA, LEED AP, is Senior Technical Lead at SCAPE. He focuses on integrating green infrastructure into urban landscapes through high-performance parks, plazas and campuses for a range of clients.

Description: Martin Harwood of Scape Studio will cover the unification of the Chattahoochee River through the implementation of a multimodal trail for the city of Atlanta and its surrounding suburbs. The lecture will discuss the challenges associated with public opinion from many different groups as well as conservation along the river's edge.

5:30 PM– 6:30 PM David Nichols and Brad Davis: Plants in Design (1 CEU) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bios: David Nichols began teaching in the School of Environmental Design in the fall of 1988. His teaching interests have focused primarily on landscape construction, site engineering, plant materials, and community residential design.

Brad E. Davis is the MLA Program Coordinator and Associate Professor for the College of Environment and Design. He is a licensed landscape architect with practice experience in South Florida and East Tennessee, where he designed residential fine gardens with a heavy emphasis on planting design, urban redevelopment projects, parks, and greenway trails.

Description: This lecture will focus on design of outdoor spaces with the proper use of plants. Brad Davis and David Nichols will discuss the composition of their book and the guiding principle that it is plant information but also design uses of plants.

Session 3

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM Perry Becker Design: COVID and Hospitality Design (1.5 CEUs) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bios: As Managing Principal of Perry Becker Design, David Perry is a seasoned hospitality design veteran with over 25 years working within the hospitality/resort and themed entertainment industry. A graduate of the University of Florida, he focused his career around creating immersive environments for people. His portfolio is wide ranging from resorts, theme parks, and destination cruise islands to large-scale residential communities, urban mix-use town centers and public parks.

Description: Perry Becker Design will cover the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought the firm and the hospitality design industry as a whole. They will also be covering how the design and construction process has changed for the niche market since.

Speaker Bios: Todd HIll is a landscape architect and land planner who provides a combination of high design, personal touch and sustainable principles in his global portfolio of landscape architecture, public park and urban regeneration projects. Todd's background includes comprehensive project work for both public agencies and private sector clients, providing services to establish the vision, principles and design concepts through documentation.

Description: Todd Hill of DTJ Design will be covering the pool revitilization of the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan. As a National Historic Landmark and the largest summer hotel in the US, the project was centered around finding a cohesive solution while preserving the existing character of the site.

1:00 PM– 2:30 PM Lauren Standish: Atlanta's Westside Quarry Park (1.5 CEUs) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: As a principal, Lauren Standish strives to enhance the user experience through connectivity and social interaction. She has the unique ability to see the end goal of a project and visualize how one can experience place through sustainability, cohesiveness, and positivity. Known for bringing parks and campuses to life, some of Standish's most notable projects include University of Georgia Law School, Georgia State Athletic Stadium, The Battery at SunTrust Park, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Clemson University South Ravenel and Duke Integrative Medicine Center.

Description: Lauren Standish of HGOR will be discussing the design of Atlanta's largest public park, the Westside Quarry Park. The lecture will cover the masterplanning of the park for community engagement as well as the sustainability factors associated with the park's design.

3:00 PM– 4:30 PM Chris Hite: The Outside Collaborative (1.5 CEUs) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bio: As president of the firm, Chris provides visionary leadership to a flourishing practice. She now shares as a mentor, teaching other leaders how running the business is more manageable and successful with the use of the firm's "6D" design approach: dreaming, discovering, designing, discussing, documenting, and delivering. Chris's design work celebrates the unique characteristics of a place's social and geographical context, with a special focus on local ecologies, cultural identity, history, native plants, local materials, urban form, regional character, and quality of life.

Description: With the goal of communicating recent advances and promoting the adoption of sustainable landscape practices in Florida, a group of private industry professionals, university researchers, government agency personnel, and non-governmental partners has recently formed a collaborative called "OUTSIDE". This lecture will share insight into that effort and provide opportunities for discussion with its leaders who will offer their perspectives, share lessons learned, and discuss next steps in the development of collaborative solutions for long term sustainable landscape success.

5:00 PM– 6:30 PM Diana Jackson, Derek Doster, and David Lynn: Athens' Clayton Street Renovation Project (1.5 CEUs) [LACES, NC pending]

Speaker Bios: Since 1997, Diana Jackson has built over 24 years of institutional knowledge of the ACCGov, staff, design approval, and procurement processes that enables delivery efficiencies, saving money, and completing on time and on budget. She understands the contracting process and knows how to keep a contract moving forward. Diana facilitates team members towards completion and has the foresight to tackle project challenges before they become issues.

Since 2005, Derek Doster has been essential in the successful delivery of numerous SPLOST projects through the diligent management, direction, and coordination of the planning, design, and construction activities for various ACCGov departments' projects. Derek brings an in-depth understanding of how your program should run on a day-to-day basis by successfully bringing projects from pre-design to design, and through construction.

David Lynn works with downtown stakeholders to develop community partnerships and manage special projects. David's career has included work in both the public and private sector including city planning; GIS; commercial real estate; and law enforcement.

Description: This walking tour will focus on the challenges and design of the downtown Athens Clayton Street Renovation Project. It will discuss the history, politics, obstacles, woes and triumphs of planning for and implementing a streetscape project while keeping businesses open.

Venue Health Screening Protocol

Each event will have a designated entrance staffed by the Classic Center Team. At this entry, all guests will need to provide one of the following three options:

  • Complete an online health affidavit screening (may be completed in advance) & have their temperature checked upon entry
  • Negative COVID test within 72hrs of the event with matching photo ID
  • Fully completed vaccination card with matching photo ID

For multi day events, we will hand out a color wristband to all participants who plan on coming and going from the event.   The wristband will need to be shown upon re-entry to the building and a temperature scan will be performed.  Documentation will not need to be shown a second time if you are wearing the wristband.
